Cannot Something Be Done, Asks Health Inspector
"Cannot somethinb be done to improve matters," asked the health inspector, Mr A. R. Knights, referring to the refuse tip in his report to the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night.
His report was: — Infectious diseases, notified, nil. Food Premises: Discussions have been held with several occupiers regarding improved methods of handling food, and regarding care in hand washing and washing of utensils. No premises can be said to be perfect, but in the main most are reasonably well kept.
Samples taken: Milk analytical 3, bacteriological 3, milkshakes 2, cordials 3, borough water, bacteriological 1. These were taken on September 26 and the results have not as yet been received. It may be mentioned that during the past nine months regular monthly sampling has revealed only one unsatisfactory analytical milk sample, and two unsatisfactory bacteriological samples. Approximately 300 gallons of milk are delivered daily in the Borough and these results must be deemed to be eminently satisfactory.
Plumbing and Drainage: Work inspected has been found satisfactory except in one case where a drain was not watertight when tested. A circular is being sent to all plumbers, and drainlayers regarding tardiness in sending in applications for permits. Sexcentennial Celebrations at Wairaka Pa: Arrangements by the committee were satisfactory. Adequate hot water was provided for washing up by three oil burners and six taps. Drainage was by post holes about 16 feet deep, and no nuisance was created. Privies we:e erected satisfactorily, and no fly nuisance was noticed. In fact the lack of flies was noticeable. Food in large quantities was handled fairly well in temporary accommodation. After the celebrations the area was cleaned and left in a satisfactory condition. Refuse Tip: Still in a disgraceful condition, and flies will soon be coming from this area. Cannot something be done to improve matters?
