WHAKATANE W.I. CELEBRATES ITS COMING OF AGE

The Whakatane Women’s Institute celebrated its twenty-first birthday on Tuesday. The large attendance of visitors and members enjoyed a bright and varied programme. Several foundation members of the Institute were present and Mrs Buddie, the first president, cut the birthday cake which was donated by Mrs Sisam and iced by Mrs Print. Several apologies and congratulatory telegrams were received from absent members and other institutes.

On behalf of the Bay of Plenty Federation, Mrs McCallion, president, presented the institute president, Mrs Stewart, with a floral spray and congratulated the institute on its wonderful achievement and for the honour it had of holding the Bay of Plenty Drama League Cup for 1950, the Winter Show Cup, a Rose Bowl from the A. and P. Society; also two Drama League certificates for th- two plays presented at the Rotorua Festival. Sister institutes were well represented, congratulations being received from representatives of the Taneatua, Waimana, Otakiri, Otar a Edgecumbe and* Kowhai institutes

Mrs Fennell won all three of the afternoon’s competitions. In the evening a successful concert was held and the following programme presented:— Tableau: “The Institute Song” (Whakatane Institute); vocal duets, “Whispering Hope” “The Rose of Tralee” (Mesdames Rugg and Leasable); Sketch, “References” (Whakatane W. 1.); Glee Club, “Where’er You Walk” “Brother James Au”; Humorous recitation, (Mrs Stokes) 1 Songs, “Pale Moon” “Passing By’ (Mrs Carter); Mime, “A Day in the Park” (Whakatane W. 1.); Sketch, “The Hat Shop” (Edgecumbe W. 1.); Shadow play, “Ug-Ug The Ogre” (Whakatane W. 1.); Humorous song “The Raisons of Puddle” (Otakiri W. 1.); Comedy, .“Green Grow the Cabbages” (Taneatua W. 1.). Last month the gardening arble met at Mrs K. Hannah’s residence when Mrs Guest presented the circle with a “Kentia Palm” as a donation to the institute’s new hall. A demonstration on grafting was also given by Mrs Fennell.
