143 SUBSCRIBERS ON EXCHANGE AT MURUPARA

One hundred and forty-three persons are listed in the first Murupara telephone directory. Among them are few party-line subscribers.

The rural automatic principle allows different numbers to be dialled for up to four subscribers on one line and Mr Jones doesn’t hear Mr Smith’s ring. There are no letters attached to party numbers. The exchange is one of a type developed especially for rural areas. It requires no staff. If a fault develops, it is indicated on the boards of neighbouring exchanges. Murupara will give continuous service. By dialling a listed number, subscribers will get toll connection through Te Teko until midnight and through Whakatane afterwards.
