Matata Women’s Institute

There was a good attendance of members for the September meeting of the Women’s Institute held at the Presbyterian Hall, Matata. Mrs Norrie and Mrs Hefferman were visitors from Te Puke. ,Mrs Norrie gave a talk on the arrangement of flowers for shows, and told of the many different points to be observed when exhibiting and of the necessity of always having very clean containers, and to adhere strictly to the schedule. Illustrations of the types and different effects of decorative work and modern styles of arrangement were shown.

Mrs Hefferman demonstrated the making of dolls and animals in felt. Members saw a number of beauti-fully-made examples of this art. A vote of thanks was tendered to the two visitors. The hall was bright with the numerous entries in the competitions, results of which were:—

Collection of bulbs, Miss Burt 1, Mrs Smith 2, Mrs Warbrick 3; 12 nemesias, Mrs Warbrick 1, Mrs Smith 2, Mrs Taylor 3; madeira cake, Mrs Magee 1, Miss Anderson 2, Mrs Smith 3; child’s pyjamas, Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Conn 2, Mrs M. Whitham 3; best vegetable, Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Conn 2, Mrs H. Withy 3; best flower, Miss M. Conn 1, Miss Burt and Miss Anderson equal 2. The sales table was in aid of the piano fund.
