DOES WHAKATANE NEED.. A New Fire Station
The answer to our question today must be an emphatic “yes.” It is hard to believe that there is any other town of this size whose fi re _fighting equipment is so badly housed or whose volunteer fire fighters work under conditions as out-of-date as those existing in Whakatane.
As this town grows, it will need better and better fire-fighting service. Such a service cannot possibly be given from the present station, which is not up to back-blocks village standard. Ratepayers may soon be asked to decide whether or not a loan should be raised to pay for a new station. Which reminds us of a fire which destroyed a big part of the business area of IVlotueka in 1939. The biigade tried to fight it with a Model T Ford engine and no water pressure. Afterwards a poll was taken to decide if the service should be modernised. The vote was No because householders in outer areas did not want to pay rates to protect business premises. It is to be hoped that nothing like that will happen here. This town’s need for a new fire station is real and urgent.
