The play in the Matatua-Horouta Rugby match on Saturday is described as follows:

Matatua swung into the attack immediately the game began and soon had Horouta on the defence. Following a forward movement in the centre of the field Aukaha punted ahead for Kingi to receive and race over in the corner. Stainton missed the kick and Horouta began to press Matatua. From a penalty awarded in the. Matatua 25 Reedy goaled to bring the score to 3-all. Matatua returned to the attack. Froma ruck on the half way Kingi received and made a beautiful opening to pass to Biddle who raced down the line to score. Stainton converted. Shortly afterwards Sainton kicked another goal to bring the score to Matatua 11, Horouta 3.

At this stage, Matatua had things very much their own way. Delamere scored for Matatua, Stainton converted and the spell ended Matatua 21, Horouta 3.

The second spell started very much the same way as the first. Falwasser and Brown, who had replaced Biddle, both scored. Stainton missed one and converted the other. The Horouta forwards began to assert themselves and were soon rewarded when Peachy went over for a try in a handy position for Reedy to convert. Horouta continued to press and again were rewarded when Dewes scored, Reedy missing the kick. The pace had taken its toll on both sets of forwards looked very tired towards the end. In the dying stages Aukaha dived over to score for Stainton to again add the extra points, and the game ended Matatua 34, Horouta 11 Stainton’s goal kicking was a feature of the match and accounted for 13 of his team’s points.
