BAY OF PLENTY BEACON Published Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 27, 1950 THE REST ROOM

From time to time, the condition of the womens rest room in Whakatane is the subject of public comment. The letter received by the Whakatane County Council from a committee of women’s organisations is a case in point. The letter, howeyer, seems to have been written with little appreciation of circumstances. The rest room is maintained by the Borough Council with a part-time attendant. Certain classes of women in this town and district have no respect for public property and the admittedly poor condition of the rest room is the direct result. A proportion of rest room users suffer from the same complaint which is all too prevalent in the district—a desire to destroy what others create. There is commonsense in the Borough Council’s suggestion that the County Council should contribute to the wages of a fulltime attendant. No doubt, the town benefits from the spending of country women who use the rooms but there is no doubt, too, that country women are by far the majority of the users of the rooms.

Certainly, there can be no satisfactory solution to a long* standing problem until there is a full-time attendant and the County Council in declining the Borough Council’s request must be considered to have lacked perception.
