Department Store Purchase Of Strand Property
Property with a 40-foot frontage has been purchased in The Strand, by J. R. McKenzie Ltd., proprietors of one of the largest chains of department stores in New Zealand for £II,OOO. The details of sale have been almost completed and a start on converting the present property is to be made as soon as possible. The property was originally owned by Mr A. J. Canning. When he retired some years ago he passed his property over to his sons, Messrs M. and R. Canning, who have since carried on with the business. At present the property is occupied by a fish shop, drapery and bakery. This is the first major sale of business property made at Whakatane for many years. Business premises are rarely vacant in the town and owners have been reluctant to sell.
