Airmen Learn Self Defence In Ground Combat
Exercises in ground combat were recently carried out by aircrew in training at Ohakea. As an experiment, pilots of No. 3 Multi-Engine course learnt unarmed combat, compass marching, handling of small arms, machine.guns, mines, booby traps and artillery drill. Surprise attacks formed part of the syllabus. A radio receiving station at Ohakea was attacked. The airmen inside the station were not aware of the action and their radio equipment was seized.
The exercises finished with a three-day “survival” trek in the Turakina district. While several “strikes” were carried out by enemy aircraft, a friendly aircraft dropped supplies by parachute. Eight pilots took part in the trek and they carried rations for two days, with one blanket.
