MODERNISED LIBRARY WILL BE OPENED NEXT MONDAY; PLANS MADE FOR IMPROVEMENT

f Arrangements for the re-opening were finalised, at a meeting of the Borough Council’s Library Committee on Thursday night. There were present the chairman, Cr C. S. Armstrong, Crs R. T. Morpeth, C. S. Buttimore and E. R. Dillicar and the librarian, Miss A. M. Brodi'ick. There was an apology for absence from the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry. Miss Brodrick was welcomed by the chairman. Library hours calculated to give the best service to both town and country subscribers were fixed. They are: — Monday to Friday: 12.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. Friday Morning: 10.30 to 11.30. (Monday Evening: 7 to 8. , Friday Evening: 7.30 to 8.30. It was agreed that the library [ would, be free for all Borough residents and that subscriptions for •country people should be 10/- a -year or 5/- a half year. There will be provision for visitors. The purchase of a large number of new books was arranged. It was decided that application should be made for a library telephone for the convenience of subscribers. The buying of further papers and periodicals for the reading room was decided on. It was decided to affiliate with the New Zealand Libraries’ Asso- : ciation. It was decided to circularise all households with details of the library. The library, as well as having a large number of books owned by the Council, will issue books, chiefly non-fiction, supplied by the National Library Service. There will be a rental section as well as shelves of free books. Children will have their own section. The reference library will be acJk within the reading ■ room. It is expected that, within ■ a year, the children’s section at ■ least will go there, with further * sections as the library expands.

Modernised and in attractively re-painted premises in the municipal offices, the Whakatane public library will re-open next Monday, October 2.
