No Real Victor In The Next War?

If there is another war there can be no real victor, because the winner will inhex-it problems none would willingly face. This view was expressed in a broadcast talk, “Canada’s Place •in the World,” given by Mr Douglas McLennan, National Secretary of the Canadian Institute for International Affairs. / “Does Canada expect war?” he asked. “We do not. But if the war comes we will be ready. “If we are unable to solve readily the economic and social and political problems we have today in Europe and Asia and the Pacific, how much more difficult it would be if, on top of these, there were thrown more desolation, more misery, and more political unrest. “So surely we must be working for peace. I do not, however, suggest another Munich. I suggest only preparedness—and as quickly as possible.” Mr McLeannan outlined the defence plans of Canada and the United States which are being made jointly. “Canada’s job is to guard the northern approaches to help patrol our sides of the two oceans and to build aeroplanes and naval ships and other armaments,” he said. Roughly 10 per cent of United States armament orders, or about one million dollars’ worth a year, will be placed in Canada. “The Canadians and the Americans are planning joint economic controls and priorities and allocations of raw materials.

What Is A Canadian? “Now you may sometimes wonder \£hat is a Canadian,” he added. “A Canadian is a person who believes in an English King but won’t let him have political power. A Canadian is a fighter who carries his own battle flag abroad, but doesn’t have his own flag at home. “A Canadian believes fervently in the Commonwealth, which almost stood alone against Hitler, yet didn’t fight as a unit. A Canadian is he who originally spread around the world the concept of a free and equal Commonwealth of Nations.

“A Canadian is a compromise, a peace lover, a person who sees two sides to every case. A Canadian is a person who seeks justice and freedom for all people; who has fought in two world wars, yet has never fought a war of aggression. “A Canadian is a person who hopes that many more New Zealanders will come to his country to fraternise and to learn about us.”
