MATATUA SEXCENTENARY CELEBRATIONS and UNVEILING OF WAR MEMORIAL AT WHAKATANE Tonight (Friday) at 8.15 p.m. in the Winter Show Buildings, an outstanding Maori Concert by talented artists and parties from all parts of the North Island. To accommodate the famous Haka Parties a special platform is being built. Concert Admission: Adults 3/-, Children 1/-. Dance to follow, admission 2/6. Look out for the Haka Party parade in the Strand one hour before the Concert. On Saturday the ceremonies will commence on the Marae at 10.30 a.m. Loud speakers will direct the great crowds as to position and details. •< , The landing of the Matatua Canoe will he enacted and when the 40-foot canoe comes in from the sea, paddled by the picked descendants of those who arrived on the Whakatane River in 1350, we will have some conception of the pioneer spirit that brought these men and women to the ends of the world . At 12 noon Hakari (feast). With visitors it is expected that 5,000 people will deplete the food from the ancient Maori stone ovens. At 1 p.m. on Rugby Park (Domain) Basketball, Hockey and Football matches be played. Descendants from each of the seven canoes that reached New Zealand in 1350 will contest with all the vigour and energy of the Maori people, the various sporting events outlined. The football match at 3 p.m. Matatua v Horouta, will provide spectators with an exciting battle to find the winner. For four hours of sporting contests the admission charges are: Adults 5/-, Children 1/-. At 6.30 p.m. Maori and ; Pakeha Returned Soldiers will have a Re-union Dinner on the Marae. Admission 10/-. At 8 p.m. Winter Show Buildings, Sexcentenary Ball. 10 p.m. presentation of prizes. Admission 7/6 and 10/-, Double Ticket 15/-.
