TE AROHA NOT COMMITTED ON PORT PROPOSAL
t An assurance that Te Aroha had not been committed any way financially with the proposal for the construction of a major sea port at Tauranga was given by the Mayor, Mr W. A. Clark, when he reported to last week’s meeting of the Te Aroha Borough Council or. the conference held at Taurango. a few days before, when local body representatives and others interested discussed the project.
Mr Clark said that a wealth cf information had been made available and it appeared as if Tauranga, rather than Whakatanje, would be the logical solution to the problem of deciding on the most suitable site for a port to serve the whole of the Bay ’of Plenty and neighbouring areas. Mr Clark was replying to a question • from Cr H. R. Carwardine, who held a strong, opinion that the matter should be considered very carefully before any moves were made.
“If we commit ourselves we will probably be faced with rates, and before we know where we are we will be involved not in thousands, but in millions,” declared Cr Carwardine.
Cr W. G. Barclay remarked that if Tauranga was finally established as an ocean going port it would mean the building of better roads and communications to that port.
