Taneatua Institute Honours Grandmothers Among Its Members
The spirit of spring was abroad at the September meeting of the Taneatua Women’s Institute when a display of spring flowers by members filled the Jiall with colour and fragrance.
However, the theme of the meeting was more autumnal in tone as it was Grandmothers’ Day and the members who are grandmothers were presented with floral sprays. The roll call, “Grandmothers’ Treasures” brought forth relics of a more leisured age—ivory fans, lovely veils of old lace and intricately hand embroidered christening gowns.
The entertainment was appropriate to the occasion being two songs, “Silver Threads Among the Gold” and “Long, Long Ago” by the Glee Club and a short play, “Grandmothers Are So Simple” by the Drama Club. Competition results:— Best flower, Mrs C. Rawson 1, Mrs A. Torrie 2, Miss Rae 3; best shrub, Mrs L. Grey 1, Mrs R. Ricketts 2, Mrs Rawson 3; best vegetable, Miss E. Armstrong 1, Mrs M, Reid 2, Mrs J. Jennings 3; patch work cushion, Mrs Torrie 1; girdle scones, Mrs W. Merrie 1, Mrs K. Allen 2, Mrs G. Bennett 3.
