Activities Of Awakeri Y.F.C.
The monthly meeting of the Awakeri Young Farmers’ Club was held in the hall on Monday night. Mr W. Murray, of Otakiri, gave an address on “Better breeding of dairy stock” and stated that a study of what other breeders did was a great help in climbing the ladder to success. Mr Murray said that severe culling was essential to maintain high class stock and the old saying of “Breed weed and -feed” still applied. Particular care should be taken in selecting herd sires, he said, and he emphasised the importance of comformation, constitution and temperament. Mr Murray concluded by saying that, in al breeders of stock, the higher one climbs the stiffer the grade becomes and the harder it is to maintain high-class stock. Mr Lomax reported on the film evening held at Awakeri on August 15. Films shown by Mr E. R. Marryatt, district secretary, were “All Blacks return from South Africa,” “Irirgation in Otago,” “Weekly Review,” “Haymaking,” and “State forest fire precautions.” The secretary, Mr Howes, reported on the club’s dance on August 26, which was a great success, both socially and financially. Mr D. Luxton gave an account of the rifle competitions held at the Legion of Frontiersmen’s range on August 29. On September 26, Mr Sorenson, nutrition expert of Fletcher’s Ltd., will show films and lecture on subjects of interest to all farmers. A challenge from the Otakiri Y.F.C. for a football match was accepted. This month’s field day will be held on Mr D. Luxton’s property on September 28 for the inspection of a modern non-stoop milking shed, designed by Mr Luxton.
