MATATUA SEXCENTENARY CELEBRATIONS and UNVEILING OF WAR MEMORIAL AT WHAKATANE September 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 1950 In the year 1350 the Matatua Canoe arrived on the banks of the Whakatane River. This month the descendants of those on that canoe who had bravely ventured into the # unknown 600 years ago, celebrate that historic landing. They also unveil a memorial to those descendants who died on the Empire’s battlefields in defence of their freedom and the freedom of the pakeha. It may not be generally known that the first of the Maori Battalion to reach the crest of Cassino, were directly descended from the men and women who landed from the Matatua Canoe. Invitations have been extended to 200 public men including the Governor-General, and 4000 Maori visitors will participate in the celebrations. A full programme will be published in the next issue, but particular attention is directed to the Maori Concert to be held,in the Winter Show Building on Friday, September 22nd at 8.15 p.m. Dance to follow. The most famous Haka and Pol parties and some of the finest artists in New Zealand will give a concert unique for its variety and the high standard of performance. Mr J. Lawson (Chairman) J. P. Hohapata (Hon. Sec.) C. Kingsley-Smith and Richard Cobbe members Maori Finance Committee.
