ABSENT FROM N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD Among the more notable absentees from this year’s open golf championships field are L. B. Johnston (Titirangi), runner-up last year at Hastings, and D. V. Sutherland (New Plymouth), who was a finalist in the amateur champion- -

ship. The total of 169 entries have been received by the secretary of the New Zealand Golf Association, Mr D. G. Sutton.

Th brilliant young Victorian professional, Peter Thomson, is one of the entries. Other Australians who have entered are H. W. Hattersley, former Australian amateur champion and Kirk Windeyer, Cup player, and his club mate, B. Fitzpatrick, who plays from a scratch handicap. No entry has been received from the British open champion, A. D. (“Bobby”) Locke, who is not expected in New Zealand until after the championships have been completed.

Limit to Field It will be necesary to exclude 29 players from the field according to a statement by Mr Sutton, as the Association had called for a maximum of 140 players. Included in the amateur entries are 24 players on a handicap of three, who will be automatically be eliminated. , It has not been decided how these five players will be eliminated but it will be by one of two methods, by ballot or on merit of play to be decided by a full meeting of the Association. The five players will be seeded from the entry of 34 on a handicap of two. Three plus two handicapped players, L. B. Johnston ,Titirangi), E. W. Young (Titirangi) and J. Jeffery (New Plymouth), who competed at Hastings last year, have not entered. T. Jeffery, also of New Plymouth has failed to enter.

Among the amateurs there are 10 players with plus handicaps, 53 on scratch, 19 on one, 34 on two. and 24 on three. Last year’s amateur championship winner—J. Holden (New Plymouth)—has entered on a handicap of plus two as had P. G. F. Smith (Auckland) and J. P. Hornabrook (Paraparaumu). Plus one players are, A. .Gibbs, D. L. Woon, A. R. Kitto, T. Jones, W. G. Horne and H. W. Hattersley, B. M. Silk (Wanganui) is the lowest handicapped player to have entered. His handicap is stated on his entry form as plus three.
