READERS CONSIDER
ABOUT CANINES Sir, —Your correspondent signing himself “Strychnine” may once have been a dog-lover. Now it is obvious that he has been made a dog-hater by depredations on his home and garden by other peoples’ pets. This emphasises that people who own dogs should be prepared to train their animals to be a minimum amount of annoyance to neighbours who derive pleasure from a well-cared for garden. With cats it is different because these delightful little creatures give such a lot of pleasure to children and to old ladies of both sexes.
It is just accident that the people who keep cats rarely keep nice gardens. It is just another accident that cats, like those residents of Whakatane who do not occupy State houses or luxury homes, are addicted to digging holes in the ground. The difference is that cats prefer those areas which have just been recently dug and carefully raked and in which choice seeds have been planted. Could I suggest to all cat lovers that every day they turn over a spot of soil in their own backyards and plant therein some nice Petunia seeds from a halfcrown packet. These are far more attractive to cats and kittens than are cheaper seeds. This procedure would give the neighbouring garden lovers at least a sporting chance of raising a few flower plants. Yours etc.,
“LETHAL CHAMBERS” Whakatane, September 8.
