HOCKEY CLUB LOTTERY BRINGS FINE OF £5

A lottery conducted on behalf of the Te Teko Hockey Club cost Takawai Edwards a fine of £5 when he appeared before Mr Walton, S.M., in the Whakatane Court yesterday. Edwards pleaded not guilty to having established a lottery at Te Teko. He was not represen led by a solicitor.

William Hunia, a shop assistant, of Te Teko, said that he was approached by Edwards on or about May 14 and asked to put his hand in a bag and take out one of a number of tickets. He knew there was a prize of £SO. He did not know what his “dip” would cost him but he understood he would pay not more than £1 and not less than a penny or twopence. He had a and found he would have to pay 18s 4d. He did not know what the lottery was in aid of. Constable R. F. Julian read a statement taken from Edwards. In it, Edwards was alleged to have said that, as chairman of the Te Teko Hockey Club, he had started a “penny-to-a-pound” raffe to raise money for the Club. The numbers in the bag produced ranged from a penny to one pound, said the constable. ,

It was not suggested that any personal gain would accrue «.o Edwards but a permit could have been secured for this raffle, said SenibrSergeant Fuller. The charge had been proved, said Mr Walton. He fined Edwards £5 and costs.
