CONGRATULATIONS

Sir, —-Congratulations to the Borough Electrical Engineer upon his proposals to put the power leads in the business area underground. In progress the first step is important and when that is accomplished further progress can be expected. Having just passed a winter in which Whakatane created a New Zealand record of two power cuts a day and three on Sundays, we have reason to fear another onslaught next winter. Meanwhile the 1 p.m. to 4 p.m, power cut on Sundays is still with us and it is most awkward for mothers of babies who ‘have to rearrange feeding times. If the Borough Electrical Engineer could go to Rotorua or Tauranga or even Ohope to find out how those areas avoid the Sunday power cut, it would be time well spent. People who believe in first things first are hardly likely to go into transports of delight because the power cables go underground when another unavoidable by-product of civilisation has to be trundled above ground in a truck at dead of night.

Yours etc.,. “SPADEWORK”
