WORK PROCEEDS ON WAR MEMORIAL GATES AT PA
Work on the Maori war memorial gates the Whare-o-Toroa Pa, Whakatane, is proceeding quickly and is expected to be completed well in tme for the Matatua sextennial celebrations to be held on the pa next month. In addition to the gates a stone wall has been constructed facing the road and these end at the centre with the gates. The gates have been set back a few feet from the road and are joined to the fence by two wings. These swing outward' to the fence to give a wide entrance. Other arrangements for the celebrations are being pursued steadily. The catering for the expected large number of visitors has posed a bit of a problem but the organising committee is managing to solve it. Sub-tribes of the district will be contributing foodstuffs. The accommodation is being cared for and large marquees are to be used to house visitors for two or three days. The main celebrations will be Held on. September 23 but the first suggested programme has been reVised. On the evening of September 22 a complete Maori concert is planned in the winter show building and will include performing parties from all the visiting tribes. In addition to this a suggestion of re-enacting the landing of the canoe is being investigated and should add interest to the celebrations if it is adopted.
