Bay Of Plenty Plays Aggressive Rugby To Beat Waikato

(Special to Beacon) TAURANGA, Sunday. Because they played sound defensive Rugby in the backs coupled with an ability to attack, and very aggressive Rugby in the forwards Bay of Plenty defeated Waikato yesterday by 13 points to 11. McLaughlin was the outstanding forward on the field and played a dashing game in the loose and a solid effort in the tight. F. Hughes, making his first representative appearance, showed well and gave considerable promise in both departments of the game, but more particularly in the tight. The Bay gained a good margin of possession in the "lineouts—largely due to the work of C. Rogers and although O. Werohia was outhooked by Has. Catley the margin was not as great as might have been expected. H. Potae was good in the loose while Gabolonsky played a patchy game. W. Trotman was forced to retire in the first stanza and was replaced by T. Penney, a Tauranga man, and a last-minute stand in. Penney played a good game and was seldom far from the ball. Something that cannot be said of some of the forwards, who play spasmodically. Raureti showed the value of the ‘Old Head’ behind the scrum. His service was good and his running tempered with judgment. A. Douglas was a shade better than the other attacking backs with J. Hai-

mona also prominent. All the backs played soundly on defence. Both F. Martin and B. McGougan played good three-quarter games, with E. Welch, his usual cool self behind them all.

Scorers were, for jthe Bay: McGougan and McLaughlin, converted by Welch and a penalty by McGougan. For Waikato: J. Graham, A. Rowan and E. Meredith scored unconverted tries.

For the Waikato, Rowan, Catley, A. D. Robertson and A. R. Reid, B. A. Cowley and R. A. Adam in the backs were most prominent.

BAY JUNIORS DEFEATED BUT NOT DISGRACED BY WAIKATO TEAM TAURANGA, Sunday. Outweighed in tjie forwards and outpaced in the backs the Bay of Plenty juniors were beaten but not disgraced by Waikato yesterday. The score, 13-3, was not a true indication of the run of play. For Bay of Plenty A. Pryor was the outstanding forward. Aggressive in the loose and honest in the tight he never let the ball get too far from him. Not prominent but honest in their efforts were H. Roberts and M. Langdon while R. Wilson and R. Boynton showed out in the harrassing play. C. Borrell was the most reliable Bay back but A. Luxton was good on defence and attack and played a solid game. The inside backs were handicapped by the fast-breaking Waikato forwards and the slow, and at times, erratic service of S. Hahunga. M. Brown was good on attack and his poor defence cost points.

Pryor’s unconverted try was made by Brown and were the only points scored by the Bay. For Waikato S. Begovitch, B. Wills, G. Puller, E. Anderson, S. Mcßae and D. Clarke were the best of a good team.

TEAMS DRAW In a rather scrappy game at Whakatane on Saturday Poroporo and United drew 6-all in the first senior Rugby match for the Bracken Cup. The other game was won by Wairaka from Taneatua, who defaulted. In the junior match for the Wilson Cup United beat Taneatua 6-0.
