Sorry No Bid: His Mistake

With the flick of a finger or the raising of an eyelid likely to be taken as a bid by experienced auctioneers, people at public auctions have to be careful about their movements. When a non-intentional bid was taken from a woman at a Hawera auction, however, it was the auctioneer who had to admit that the mistake was all his. Bidding on an article of furniture was at its height when the auctioneer caught the movement of a hand out of the corner of his eye, recorded the bid, and then took another look at the bidder. He recognised her and his mistake at the same time. It was a well-dressed dummy and the arm had been moved when an onlooker had accidentally pushed a couch against which the dummy had been leaning.
