EASTERN BAY TEAM LEAVES The Eastern Bay of Plenty representative basketball team left Whakatane yesterday for the New Zealand Championships, which are to commence at Palmerston North tomorrow. The team 'will return next Mon<iay. The whole party includes 12 players and two officials. It will be the first Eastern Bay of Plenty team to compete in the championships. On Saturday the full 12 players, seven from Whakatane and fave from Opotiki, practised at Whakatane and at the conclusion officials expressed satisfaction with the showing of the team.
WIN AND LOSS FOR BUSINESSMEN A 9-4 win was scored by Whakatane businessmen against the Redwings team in the annual basketball fixture played on Saturday. The standard of basketball was good considering—with the businessmen showing some unexpected talent. In e* second game against Olympics the businessmen were unable to ■match, the fast positional play of their opponents and went down 17-7.
These two fixtures have been played for the last few years and gained in popularity. It is understood that the businessmen intend v to ddnate trophies for the games next year to be competed for annually.
