TAURANGA WINS ELLISON CUP The Ellison Cup match Tauranga v Central Bay of Plenty, at Edgecumbe was the big hockey game of Saturday. From the start, it was fast and open. Just after the start the Central Bay fullback retired hurt and the team had'to be re-shuffled. Tauranga immediately attacked and sound combination by the forwards put Tauranga one goal up. Tauranga continue to attack but the Central Bay fullbacks stopped all attacks—the half time score being 1-0. Soon after the second spell began Tauranga attacked strongly and again netted. Central Bay retaliated and from a tussle in the circle, scored. Tauranga 2, Central Bay 1.
Tauranga at this stage were showing good combination and were definitely on top. Two more goals were netted by Tauranga after good forward play and • the game ended With Tauranga winning the Ellison Cup by 4-1. For Tauranga goals were scored by Parkinson 2, Palmer 1, Bagley 1; for Central Bay, D. Cornwall 1. N. Giles and B. Henderson controlled the game.
SHIELD GAME FOR SUNDAY The following.game will be played next Sunday at Awakeri to decide the team which is to defend the Pokai Shield against Ceneral Matatua hockey representatives:— Awakeri (1949 holders) v Riverslea (1950 championship winner) at 1 p.m.; umpires, O. V. Marx and K. Civil.
HUIMAI KEEPS SHIELD
In a hockey match for the Nepia Hona Shield at Te Teko on Saturday the holders, Huimai, retained the trophy by defeating Murupara four goals to’'two.
