Refuse Tip Needs Proper Control?

The refuse tip would always be unsatisfactory and unsightly without proper control, stated the sanitary inspector, Mr A. R. Knights, in his report to the Whakatane Borough Council on Monday night. He reported:— The tip has been maintained in as good order as possible under difficult circumstances, but is still very unsatisfactory. The tip always will be unsatisfactory and unsightly without proper control. If the Harbour Board cannot be induced to co-operate with the filling in of the mudflats at the rear of business premises, which would be satisfactory for the disposal of all refuse by controlled tipping. I suggest that some consideration be given to the composting of all refuse. This is being done at Masterton, with very satisfactory results. I am forwarding an article on this subject, which outlines the procedure. Though the population of Masterton is about three times that of Whakatarie, the layout could be modified to suit local conditions. While there is no reclamation, of land by this method of refuse disposal, there will be no rat or fly breeding, and the finished compost finds a ready market. If desired, I will obtain any further information from the writer of the article, Mr T. Russell.
