SUPPLIES SCARCE FOR WHAKATANE BUILDERS
Reports from other districts that building supplies are becoming comparatively easy to obtain are only partly borne out in Whakatane.
The fact that, at its meeting on Monday night, the Borough Council was told that £16,000 worth of building permits, including those for commercial premises, had been granted in a month, led the Beacon to make inquiries about supplies.
Cement was still most difficult to obtain, a leading supplier said. Soft timbers were in reasonable supply but heart grades were still hard to secure. •
Because there had been some imports from Britain, asbestos sheeting was in stock. Aluminium sheeting, also was obtainable. Bricks were, as previously, hard to come by in Whakatane. A builder’s requisite which was very had to secure was nails.
