Tree Planting At Eivers Domain Commended A t Council Meeting

Work done in the planting of trees at Eivers Beach Domain was commended by Cr H. G. Warren at a meeting of the Whakatane Borcugh Council on Monday’night. He was speaking to the report of the foreman, Mr C. D. Molesworth, who stated:—

Old County Road. Fifty yards of river shingle from the Wainui Te Whara dredging has been spread on the formation to give temporary access to dwellings. Crete Street Storm Water Drainage. Twelve inch pipe drain through private property has been lifted, ready for relaying along Salonika Street to Douglas Street. Toroa Street Footpath. Filling has been spread to raise low portions of the footpath, and the surface dressed with metal waste.

Water Supply. Four new service connections have been provided and two blowouts repaired. Domain. A bulldozer has been engaged on the camping site and show ground area removing gum trees and stumps, and levelling the cleared area. Suitable trees have been cut into logs and fleeted on skids ready for removal.

Eivers Beach Domain. An area inside the stop bank 12 chains long by half a chain wide has been fenced and planted with pohutukawa, karaka and ngaio trees to form a shelter belt for the proposed new camping site. Hinemoa Street Bridge. Timber has been ordered to replace portion of the decking that has decayed, Maintenance work engaged on includes: Grading and patching metal roads, cutting back grass shoulders on bitumin roads, clearing storm V\ater outlet drains, sexton’s duties, including six interments. Present at the meeting were the Mayor; Mr B. S. Barry, Crs C. S. Armstrong, H. G. Warren, R. S. Buttimore, M. Lennie, R. T. Morpeth, A. O’Rourke and E. Dillicar. The report of”the electrical engineer, Mr F. W. Lysaght, included the following:— New James Street Substation. The new structure for this substation has been completed. New Secondary Lines, James Street. The new secondary lines in the far end of James Street have now been completed. New Bridge Street Substation. This substation has now been completed and is now in service. Considerable improvement has been effected in this area. - '

Transmission Line: Considerable damage was caused to several sections of this line on (the Edgecumbe) on Sunday afternoon August 6. This damage was caused by a cyclone which brought down a number of large gum trees a number of which fell across our line at several points. All telephone communication with the Public Works substation was disconnected and considerable delay w 7 &s caused b;s reason of this and also the fact that it happened during the shutdown period. Water Works Department. The pumping plants have been in service every day during the month and are in fair order. No. 3 pump has been dismantled and has been taken to A. and G. Price, Thames, for a complete overhaul.
