PAROA MAN IS INJURED IN COLLISION

Injuries to the head and leg were suffered by Andrew Ratene, driver, of Paroa, who was involved in' a collision af Paroa at about 6.10 p.m. on Saturday. He was admitted to the Whakatane District Hospital where his condition this morning was reported as satisfactory. Mr Ratene was driving a light truck at the time of the accident and the vehicle is believed to be a complete loss.

The collision occurred on the Whakatane-Tauranga highway about U miles beyond the Poroporo store turn-off.

Mr Ratene was returning from Whakatane and was just rounding a bend when his vehicle collided with a truck proceeding in the opposite direction and driven by Roderick A. McKenzie, a contractor of Whakatane. Mr McKenzie had a passenger in the truck with him but both escaped injury. It is understood that Mr Ratene was dazzled momentarily by the headlights of the approaching vehicle and during that short period the accident occurred.

The right hand side of Mr McKenzie’s truck was fairly extensively damaged but it was driven away later under its own power.
