Lodge Cards The Whakatane Druids Lodge card evening held on Tuesday was won by Mrs J. D. Rivett and Mr J. Rutherford, the booby prizes going to Mrs Grey and Mr L. Needham. A competition was won by Mr and Mrs J. Reynolds.

Croquet Results The Whakatane Croquet Club card afternoon held in the pavilion cn Wednesday, resulted in a win for Mesdames R. Brown, J. Creeke, Fitzsimmons and A. Luck. The booby prizes went to Mesdames F. Comer, E. Dillicar, L. Bridger and Pickford.

Table Tennis There was the regular attendance of enthusiastic players at the Whakatane Table Tennis Club night m the winter show buildings on Wednesday. A handicap tournament was. won by R. Mahy, with D. Haddon runner-up.

Catholic Afternoon A well attended Catholic card afternoon held on Tuesday resulted in wins for Mesdames M. Barrowman, E. Bathe, R. Brown and A. Guptill. Booby prizes went to Mesdames A. Judd, A. Burgess, Fitzsimmons and P. Hodges.

Maori War Gong

A large grey stone on Tarahanga Island in the Waikato River where it flows past Churchill is believed to be a war gong used by the Waikato Maoris in the days of tribal warfare. It has been offered by the , owner of the island, Mr R. Gibb, of Ngaruawahia, to Princess Te Puea. The gong is cylindrical and is about 6ft long and 15in in diameter. At present it is lying on top of the grave of a Maori chief who is interred on part of the island which is an old Maori burial ground.
