NEW POSTAL RATES NOT OBSERVED BY SOME FIRMS YET

There are still some Whakatane firms who have not realised that postal rates for all account letters have increased from Id to lid. A small percentage of letters have been posted short of the additional id. Most of the Id envelopes contain accounts, so to spare firms the pain of opening ,returned accotmts for £2 accompanied by cheques for £1 19s lid (double deficient postage having been deducted by the recipient), the post office has telephoned the defaulters to call and add the additional stamps. One reason for the lapses offered is that letters have been franked as before without the additional id being marked. Private posters of newspapers and other items on which rates have increased have caused much less trouble than businesses, but both private and commercial postal users can have a new booklet on postage rates free on application to a post office.
