COUNCIL TO URGE SEALING TE TEKOEDGECUMBE ROAD

A move to have sealing work on the Awakeri-Edgecumbe-Te Teko main highway carried out as soon as possible is to be made by the Whakatane County Council. It was decided at the monthly meeting yesterday to request definite information from the Ministry of Works, the controlling body of the highway, when the work is likely to be done.

This decision was reached after a full discussion when it was pointed out that dust clouds -on the road during the summer were not only a nuisance to nearby residents but also a menace to drivers. In a letter from the Ministry of Works it was stated that plans had been prepared and tenders were to be called for the construction and sealing of roading. The letter stated that sealing would be carried out by the Department next February or March.

If it was going to take that time to seal the road Cr R. C. Leslie said he thought some maintenance work should be done in - the meantime. Even though the road was not the responsibility of the Council they Were being blamed for its present state.

Mr J. L. Burnett (chairman): If we had our way we would have the whole stretch sealed. A suggestion that something should be done, even to just settling the dust was made by Cr W. Hunter. He thought it was up to the council to do something in this direction. People near the road dreaded the summer because of the dust. They were worried with clouds of it all day. It was pointed out that the road had to be re-aligned and built up. It was the responsibility of the Ministry of Works and any work done by the council now might be wasted a few weeks later when the Department started reconstruction. Cr Hunter said he still felt something should be done. For the last few years the people had suffered and it appeared that they would have to suffer another summer.

If sealing was to be done Cr Leslie considered preliminary work should be commenced within the next few months.
