Large Attendance There was a large attendance at the Whakatane Bowling Club Progressive 500 card evening held at the Pavilion on Thursday. The winners were Mrs Delahunty and Mr A. White, and the booby prizes went to Mrs S. Shapley and Mr C. Head. The competition was won by Mr J. Hanright.
Bridge Collapses The bridge to the eastern end of Ohope Beach on the -Wainui Road has been renewed following its recent collapse, the engineer, Mr C. H. Brebner, told the Whakatane County Council yesterday. ' The road had been used a lot lately following the diversion of traffic from the Waimana Gorge.
Ur ewer a Riding » Because of objections representation of the new Urewera Riding in the Whakatane County will be similar to those of other ridings. It was the intention previously to allow the representative to be a Maori only but a number of objections to this proposal were received.
Y.F.C. Visit Mill
Several members of the Thornton Young Farmers’ Club spent a very interesting afternoon at the Whakatane Board Mills. Mr Butler showed the party through.the factory and pointed out many interesting features in the processing and’ manufacturing of the various paper products.
Stole Watch For stealing a watch valued £lO Daniel Pihema, farm hand, Thornton, was convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ gaol by Messrs L. H. Brown and C. Brebner, J’s. P., in the Whakatane Police Court. On a further charge of stealing a bunch of keys he was convicted and discharged. Ohope Foreshore Control
The control" of the Ohope- foreshore has now been vested in the Ohope Domain Board for the next 21 years. Formally controlled by the Whakatane County Council the foreshore area extends from the mouth of the Ohiwa Harbour to the northern side of Otarawairere Bay, a distance of about eight miles ten chains.
Rotoma Bush Reserve The suggestion of preserving native bush at the foot of Rotoma hill as a scenic reserve, is to be referred to the Minister of Lands. This was revealed at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Gounty Council. A recommendation from the Council is to be made through the Minister of Labour, Mr Sullivan.
First Effort The first play of the Whakatane Repertory Theatre is to be presented tonight and tomorrow evening at Whakatane. Although the Theatre has only been formed a few months the large membership has already displayed much enthusiasm and rehearsing has been proceeding steadily for several weeks. Early reports trickling out seem to indi cate that the company is “not bad ”
Visiting Pianist One of New Zealand’s most successful pianists, Miss Cara Hall, Christchurch, is ‘to present a recital at the Whakatane High School tonight. Well known in the Dominion Miss Hall has been received with pleasure in the centres where she has appeared as soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra. It is not often that Whakatane people have the opportunity of seeing this country’s successful musicians.
Three Men Imprisoned Found without lawful excuse on the premises of the Whakatane District Hospital at 3 a.m. on July 23 three young men were each convicted and sentenced to one month imprisonment by Messrs C. Hj Brebner and H. G. Warren, J’s. P., in the Whakatane Police Court on Monday. The accused were Whainoa Himenona, Hira Tawa and Kiri. Wana, all labourers of Paroa.
Ohope Development The Whakatane County Council is keen to have an area of undeveloped Crown Land at the eastern end of the Ohope sandspit subdivided for bach lots. At yesterday’s monthly meeting it was decided to approach the member for the district, Mr W. Sullivan, to ask him if he .could ascertain the Government’s intention to subdividing such land.
