SUPPORT FOR PLUNKET
Sir, —May I through your columns and on behalf of the Plunket Society make an appeal to the mothers of Whakatane and surrounding dis* tricts.
When Sir Truby King founded the Plunket Society times were very different from what they are now. Nurses’ salaries were approximately half those ruling today and they had no cars for visiting town and country homes. Incomes too were low in comparison. It was with these things in mind and to make the Plunket service available to ail sections of the community that Sir Truby King the minimum subscription to the Society at 5/- per annum. The rules of the Society will not permit the raising of this subscription, but it is desired to point out that 5/- per annum is the minimum amount payable and is out of all proportion to the value of the service which is available whenever required. The Society is appealing to mothers throughout New Zealand to pay a little more by way of annual subscription, say one week’s Familv Benefit allowance. If all mothers did this it would hot be necessary to appeal to the general public for financial assistance. The valuable advice the Plunket Sister is happy to give weekly should, it is felt, be worth more than a fraction over one -penny per week. x The Society hopes that mothers will give this matter their earnest consideration and looks forward to receiving more annually by way of voluntary subscription. J. B. ROACH, President, Whakatane Branch, Plunket Society. Whakatane, July 25.
