Eat As Much As You Would Like But Only 0f...
The kind of diet list that starts off with “Eat as much as you like of . . .” does wonders for a slimmer morale. Even the fact that the list is not as appetising as might be hoped for, it is the postive rather than the negative approach that helps. There is a doctor’s list of what can be eaten in large quantities:— Lean meat, poultry, rabbit, liver, kidney, heart, sweetbreads—cooked in any way, but without flour, bread crumbs, or thick sauces. Fish (not tinned), boiled or steamed only; not thick sauce. Eggs, boiled or poached only. Potatoes, boiled, steamed, or baked in skins, but not fried, roast, or “chips.” Other vegetables of all kinds, so long as they are not cooked in fats, Salads or tomatoes without mayonnaise. Fresh fruit of any kind. Not tinned or stewed with sugar, and no dried fruits. Saccharine for sweetening. Drinks allowed are water, soda water, and non-sweetened mineral waters, tea and coffee, including the half-pint of milk allowed daily. Bread is limited to two very small pieces a day (not over loz). The following are things not allowed (better not to read these and just follow the positive chart. Definite denial stimulates a craving): No butter, fat, oil, or cream. No sugar, jam, honey, sweets, cocoa, or chocolate. No pudding, ice cream, or nuts. No macaroni, barley, rice, cheese, sausages. No alcohol.
