SUNDAY FILM SCREENING FOR CHARITY WANTED
The views of the churches are to be obtained by the Whakatane Borough Council on Sunday screening of a film for charity purposes This was decided at the monthly meeting on ‘Monday night. A number of councillors opposed the suggestion but an equal number . were in favour of it, provided it did not conflict with the ideas of the Church. The question arose from a letter from Kerridge-Odeon theatres asking for the council’s decision on screening a new film at Whakatane one Sunday evening, all proceeds to go to an old people’s home at Auckland. The film will be a new. release and suitable for a Sunday. It will start after Church hours. There are to be no maintenance costs, the theatre staff giving their services free.
Invitations will be sent to various townspeople'to attend the picture at a price of 10s, Cr A. O’Rourke and the Mayor, Mr B. S. Barry, were not in favour of the proposal. They thought it might be the “thin edge of the wedge.” As long as it did not conflict with the church Cr H. G Warren expressed his support. It. was for a worthy cause. The care of the aged people in New Zealand was of nam tional importance and he thought that-the proposal was a good one • and worthy of support. Cr R. Buttimore agreed and suggested that before any decision was made the Council obtain the views >of the Ministers’ Association. Cr R. T. Morpeth was inclined to think that the proposal should be allowed. An old people’s home was needed at Auckland. Disapproval of the scheme was -expressed by Cr K. Needham. He •thought that if the company wanted to help the old people proceeds should be given from a week night screening.
