Shortage Of N.Z. Hardwood Timber Supply Forecast
Industrial expansion in Australia rnd the prospects of a rapid increase of population there as a result of extensive immigration threaten to absorb more and more of the available supplies of Australian hadwood timber. These factors threaten a definite reduction of supplies for export to New Zealand.
Information to this effect was conveyed in a letter received by the Poverty Bay Electric Power Board.
The letter summarised a report made by the commercial manager of the N.Z. State Forest Service, and his conclusion that New Zealand consumers would have difficulty in securing completion of contracts already entered into. The Australian domestic market was now able to absorb the whole of the product of the timber-get-ters in the Commonwealth, the Forest Service manager reported, and supply authorities were advised to review all existing contracts.
