Preparing Pa Work of preparing the Wairaka Pa, Whakatane, for the centennary celebrations in September has been proceeding for some weeks past. The whole area has been levelled and is now being fenced. The cost for the celebrations is being borne equally by Ngatiawa sub-tribes, descendants of the crew of the Hatatua canoe. The celebrations will cover two days, ending on September 23 and will mark the 60Gth anniversary of the arrival of the Matatua canoe at Whakatane.

Cost of a Suit The total cost o'f the raw wool used to make a man’s suit costing £ls was only approximately 15/-, according to information given at a meeting of the meat and wool section of Federated Farmers. The raw wool cost 5.52 per cent of the total cost, the processing cost 17.18 per cent, and the profit margin on the cloth accounted for 3.94 per cent. The suit would cost 35.09 per cent to be made up, and the wholesale and retail mark-ups on the finished suit added together amounted to 37.27 per cent.

Feeding Cows Bay of Plenty farmers are advised that it is imperative that cows be well fed for six to eight weeks before calving. The Department of Agriculture urges that they should have access to hay at all times and that, if the is poor, they should also receive up to wenty pounds of silage each daily. Earlycalving cows should be given abo\it two hours’ grazing daily on autumn saved pasture and in addition should be fed as much silage as they will eat.
