Much Use Of Tobacco In N.Z.
New Zealanders smoke an average of 51b of tobacco a year, according to the latest Abstract of Statistics.
The “total consumption of tobacco, all kinds,” is recorded as: 1938, 6,164,000; 1945, 6,655,0001 b; 1946, 8,099,0001 b; 1947, 9,589,0001 b; 1948, 8,784,0001 b. “Consumption of tobacco per head of population” is given as : 1938, 3.841 b; 1945, 3.931 b; 1946, 4.60 lb; 1947, 5.321 b; 1948, 4.771 b.
The total Customs and excise duty paid on tobacco has been: 1938, £2,194,000; 1945, £4.909,000; 1946, £5,888,000; 1947, £7,120,000; 1948, £6,538,000. “The 1947 figures for tobacco which was in short supply during the later war years, is probably an over-statement of actual consumption in 1947,” the Abstract states, “because it is likely that there was some building-up of retail stocks in that year.”
