Summer On The Way And Longer Days

To the many Whakatane people who get out of bed shivering in the morning to the tune played by “Jack Frost” it may be some consolation to them to know that summer is on the way and from now the days should be growing longer and warmer. The reason? The shortest day was-last Wednesday—the winter solstice. However, it will be some time yet before any appreciable change is noticeable. The winter solstice is the day When the sun reaches its northernmost point in the northern hemisphere so that the hours of daylight in the southern regions are the shortest in the whole year. Immediately the sun begins its southward move but for the next few days the difference in the hours of daylight will vary little.
