Capital Punishment A “free bill” on the question of capital punishment would probably be introduced by the Government some time tfiis year, the Minister for Social Welfare, Mrs H. Ross, stated in an address at Whakatane on Monday. Removal of Trees Gum trees in the Whakatane Domain are to be remo\ ed by the roots. Arrangements have been made by the borough foreman, Mr C. D. Molesworth, to have the trees bulldozed. The timber, is to be taken by a timber company and a firewood business. "

Children’s Playground A scheme of the Whakatane Rotary Club to establish a children’s playing area at the Short Street entrance to the Domain was approved by the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. It is intended that' the playing equipment provided will be for children of pre-school age.

Weather Hampers Work Continual wet w r eather has been hampering the construction of an access road to the. site of the new water works reservoir the borough foreman, Mr C. D. Molesworth, reported to the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council. Excavation work for the constructnon of the reservoir is nearing completion. Vigil Continues

Continuing his vigil on the town refuse tip the sanitary inspector, Mr A. R. Knights, had little to say on the area in his report to the monthly meeting of tile Whakatane Borough Council. His terse coment was: “No improvements have been made with a view tc having the area under full and proper control.” Trust Hotel Poll A poll of ratepayers on the question of the Council establishing a trust controlled hotel at Whaka • tane is to be held in August _ oi early September. This was decided at the monthly meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council when the town clerk, Mr L. D. Lovelock, suggested that the poll be held then when the new borough roll would be compiled for the municipal elections later this year.

Despite a hurried search through the order papers he could noL.find anything about it. Nobody seemed to know what it was about. Memories got to work and although power was off light was shed on the matter and the motion was duly passed.

New Power Transformer Some relief to existing power equipment at Whakatane will be provided by a new power sub-sta-tion, which is to be installed in Bridge Street. The electrical engineer, Mr F. W. Lysaght, told the monthly meeting of the Borough Council that a new transformer had been received and would be installed as soon as possible. However, he pointed out, that the necessary authority to have the work completed would have to be obtained from the Ministry of Works, Driver Rendered Unconscious

A painful accident befell Mr Trevor Warren, a freight lorry driver of the Opotiki Road Services staff. He was picked up on the roadside at Nukuhou in an unconscious condition by a party of Whakatane residents after midnight. It appears that one of the inside tyres at the rear of the lorry blew out and when taking off the outside wheel this also blew out, with the consequences that Mr Warren was hit on the forehead by the wheel and he received the full blast of air and dust in his eyes. He was knocked back some distance and landed on the back of his head.
