TOA HAULS HERSELF FREE FROM SANDBANK
The Northern Steamship Company’s coastal vessel Toa, was hauled off the sandbank at the mouth of the Whakatane River, where it had been grounded since Thursday, -early Saturday afternoon practically undamaged. A large crowd saw the ship come free and then enter the harbour to discharge her cargo.
The Toa literally pulled herself free. A line was fired by rocket apparatu Ffrom the eastern bank of the river to the ship where one end was fixed to the windlass while the other end was made fast to a reef. At high tide the windlass was set working and the line the strain. The ship moved and’ then slid between two large rocks into' the centre of the river where she was towed into the harbour. .
Today both the Toa and the Clansman, which arrived just on midday, are discharging at the Whakatane Board Mills wharf. The Toa will return to Auckland empty for overhaul:
