MAN CRUSHED BY LAUNCH: ROPE BREAKS

Painful injuries to the back and chest were suffered by Mr Lloyd George, McAlister Stree,t Whakatane, when a launch rolled and crushed him against a chock at about noon on Wednesday. He was rushed to the Whakatane District Hospital by a friend who was working with him, Mr T. Reid, but his condition this morning was reported to be comfortable.

Mr George and Mr Reid are joint owners of ' the launch and were pulling it ashore for cleaning. The launch was held by a rope when Mr George crawled under to place chocks in position. While under the boat a strand of the rope broke and the vesel rolled slowly over to catch Mr George and crush him against the cradle of a chock. Mr Reid lifted the boat back and the injured man was able to wriggle out. He was able to walk to the car,, although in pain, and also to walk into the hospital.

Yesterday Mr Reid said he could not explain how he lifted the launch off Mr George. The boat 'is a large one but he managed to raise it enough for Mr George to slide from underneath.
