Junior Red Cross A circle of the junior red cross has now been started at the Edgecumbe School it was reported to the monthly meeting of the Edgecumbe Sub-Centre. It is to be in charge of Miss Webb and Miss Stewart.
Dog’s Success Mr R. J. Tuck, Taneatua, had considerable success with his dog Tuck at the Opotiki Sheep Dog Trial Club trials. He gained a first in the zig-zag huntaway 'and a third in the straight huntaway. In the short head, hunt and yard he was fourth.
Birthday Celebrated Mr J. Grant, well known Galatea pioneer, celebrated his 87th birthday last week with a small gathering of intimate friends. Mr Grant is a popular and well known figure throughout the district for his timely flood warnings, which have been a boon to people living near the lower reaches of the Rangitaiki River. Roads Praised “They are marvellous compared with what they were 21 years ago,” said Mr J. W. Franklin, M.l|.Et., London, when commenting on the state of the Dominion’s arterial roads. Mr Franklin said he was in the Dominion 21 years ago and now found a great change in the construction and surface of the main highways.
Maori Melody ' An. interesting programme of Maori music is to be broadcast by 2YA Wellington* at 9.30 p.m. on Sunday. The whole broadcast will be made up of recordings of authentic ffakas • and Waiatas (songs), some of which have never been broadcast before which were recorded by a mobile unit at Tokaanu. First Test Broadcast The first Rugby test between the touring British. Isles team and New Zealand is to be played at Dunedin tomorrow. The game will start at 2.30 p.m. and will be broadcast by all YA stations. For Bay of Plenty listeners the most suitable station will be IYA Auckland. The Bay of Plenty station IYZ will broadcast a pre-test review at 12.33 p.m. Ohope Social Evenings Social evenings are again to be held at Ohope this year by the Ohope Progressive League along with other organisations of the district. The first is to be held on June 1. Although the socials will be run more as a pleasant weekly gathering for Ohope residents and visitors it is hoped to make them self supporting. Last year they proved to be very popular. Licences Issued
During the past year 7191 licences and permits were issued in the Whakatane County according to the annual report. This is 104 more than the figure for the previous year. The total included 3048 <^B93) in 1948-49, drivers’ licences 1224 (.1224), heavy traffic licences and 2456 (2693) dog licences. The licence receipt was £10,161 17s 2d (£9046 8s 6d).

A total of 864. Watchmaking Classes
Although the number of apprentices in watchmaking and jewelery manufacturing are small—9l and . 45 respectively—the New Zealand Apprenticeship Committee for these industries sees possibilities of developing technical education for them in the near future. It has decided to send apprentices in their fifth and subsequent periods of apprenticeship to technical classes for a week as soon as classes can be arranged.
Real Thoroughbred Unconscious humour w r as provided by a Maori who tried to sell him a horse, said Sir John McKenzie, addressing a Rotary Club at their luncheon. “It’s a very good horse, and will win you lots of money,” the Maori had urged. Sir John told him he was not very keen to buy the animal, but he asked about its pedigree. “I don’t know what pedigree means,” said the Maori. “Well, who is it by, and what is it out of?” asked Sir John. “He is by himself, out in the paddock,” the Maori had replied.
