School Holidays All schools in the Bay of Plenty will commence a fortnight’s holiday from today. The first term ended on Friday. Schools will be resumed on May 23. Change of Date
A change in the date of Mr S. Campbell’s sale at Whakatane has Keen made by the auclioners the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company. The sale is now to be held on Thursday, May 25, in Bridge Street —P.B.A.
State Houses Allocated Twenty-seven State houses were allocated to ex-servicemen in the Bay of Plenty-Waikato area during March, according to the Rehabilitation Department. This now brings the total allocation in. that district to 1075.
Founder Remembered The founder of the Red Cross Society, Henri Dunant, was remembered at Whakatane yesterday v.hen churches opened Red Cross Week. During the week an appeal vyill be made for assistance for Red Cross work.
Aircraft Grounded All Mark IV and - Mark V Proctor aircraft operating in New Zealand have been grounded since last month on Air Department instructions. It is understood that they will not be relicensed for dying until fairly extensive modifications have been carried out.
May Withdraw Although no decision has yet been reached the Tauranga Rugby Sub-Union is seriously considering withdrawing from inter-sub-union shield games in the Bay of Plenty this year. It is suggested that instead of sending representatives to ether centres to contest shield games., Tauranga should continue with its club games.
More Players Wanted More players for all grades are wanted by rugby teams in both the Whakatane and Rangitaiki SubUnions. At Whakatane there are three grades, senior, junior and third grade, while in the Rangitaiki there are two, senior and junior. Any club will welcome new players who desire to play football this season. There is a definite shortage of third grade players.
Broadcasting Hours The Bay of Plenty broadcasdng station IYZ along with other New Zealand stations will observe restricted broadcasting hours from today. From Monday to Friday all stations will come on the air at a.m. and cease transmission at 10.30 p.m. Saturday hours will remain unchanged but on Sunday broadcasting hours will be from 7.30 a.m to 10 p.m.
Opinions Differed Opinions differed among the many people who saw the New Zealand film on the British Empire Games, which was screened at Whakatane last week. Some liked the picture and considered it a good effort while others /thought it was a poor job. One woman was heard to admire the picture as a “good record” but her husband had no such thoughts and described it as being “very amateurish.”
