APPEALS FOR CORSO
Sir, —Throughout the month of May, CORSO (N.Z. Council of Organisations for Relief Service Overseas) is making a special appeal for urgently needed funds' to help the people of China, now threatened with one of the worst famines in all their long history. Death and disease face millions of human beings unless -aid can reach thefh promptly. We are asking the people of New Zealand to hqlp through CORSO. Since this is an emergency appeal, we are asking every daily and weekly paper in the country to assist us by opening a CORSO China Appeal list. CORSO is opening the appeal with a grant of £SOO from its general fund. We hope that all newspapers will be prepared to receive and. acknowledge contributions: alternatively, contributions may be sent direct to CORSO at 100 Lambton Quay, Wellington. New Zealand has already brought help in money, food, .clothing, and personal services, to those in greatest need in many countries in Europe and Asia. Today there is a team of CORSO field workers, including doctors and nurses, in China: their letters confirm the urgent need for special aid at this time to relieve the victims of famine. We shall have their help and advice in the allocation of funds and supplies, which we propose to distribute through two recognised agencies with which we have worked in the past, the China Welfare Fund of Madame Sun Yatsen and the Catholic Welfare Committee of China. Some of the money raised will go to the support of existing \ CORSO commitments in China, -including assistance to the rehabilitation work of Rewi Alley. We know that we can ensure that every , contribution *is used to the best advantage; and we are confident that New Zealanders will give us the generous support they have always given in times of greatest need.
» Yours fete., R. M. CAMPBELL,
Chairman C. S. FALCONER, v Vice-Chairman COLIN W. MORRISON, Secretary, CORSO, Wellington, May 1. Any donations to the CORSO appeal from residents of the district will be acknowledged in the Beacon and the amounts forwarded to Wellington. Editor.
