Pony Clubs Hold Popular Combined Wind-Up Rally
The wind-up rally for the Te Teko and Thornton-Matata Pony Clubs was held on Sunday at Mr R. Orr’s farm, Edgecumbe. Both clubs met for a picnic rally, which was one of the most successful of the season. The children’s bending, followed by fathers showing them how, put everyone in full readiness for their picnic lunch. The potato race on horseback for the children was most exciting, and proved more amusing when the women took their turn. The going was tougher for them. After placing all the potatoes in b one bucket, competitors had to ride 50 yards, pump a hurdle and back again. The winner was undoubtedly Mrs M. Orr, others making the grade were Mesdames J. Orr, Minchen Magee and the Misses Black and Hogan. 4 The main feature of the day was the mode hunt, run over an ideal miniature course around the homestead. Safely over the first jump, complete with hounds, went Huntsman McNaught on “The Yank”. The field led by Ward Master R. Orr on “The Gent” followed the pack closely. The scent was picked up on the homeward run past the lunch baskets. The neatest jump of the day was made by one of the wips, Mr Ned Hill, riding “Grey Lady.” Mr Hill cleared the jump Grey Lady refused.
G. Magee tailed the field on Baulking Billy. The riders taking part in the day’s fun were: E. Hogan, V. Orr, A. Reid, H. Pryor, R. Glen, B. Orr, T. Cook, B. Cook, R. Kinley, C. Ilenry, E. Hill, R. Hill, G. Magee, M. Hill, R. Lopes and B. Magee. The day closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Orr and a firm assurance to repeat the performance more often next season.
