New Postal Delivery
The postal delivery from the Whakatane Post Office is to be extended next week to the new State house block in Tunoe Avenue. All residents in the street will have to erect post boxes to receive maiL Birth Increase Births and marriages registered at Whakatane during April showed a definite increase compared with the same period in 1949. Last month there were nine marriages and 22 births as against two and IS the previous year. Deaths decreased from six to one. Lighting Check A check has been started on motor vehicle lighting throughout New Zealand and is at present in full swing. At Whakatane many drivers have been warned to have their vehicle lights seen to. The Transport Department is carrying out the checks. Good Catches Fishing craft out from Whakatane in the last few days report good catches of schnapper and hapuku. Launches during the weekend came back to port well loaded. Fishermen over in the Ohiwa Harbour and Ohope area report that there has been an increase in the amount of fish about lately.
Application Refused An application by George Ewert Murray (Mr J. McGlone) driver, Whakatane, for postponement for possession of a dwelling in Domain \ Road, Whakatane, at present occupied by him against the owner, Pango Whetu (Mr Buddie) was refused by Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., at Whakatane yesterday.
Shooting Trophy One display at the last shoot of the Whakatane 'Legion Miniature Rifle Club was a trophy donated by Mr W. Tyssen for inter-house competition in the district. All 1 business houses and local clubs are eligible to shoot for this trophy and some keen competitions are expected to take place this winter.
Broadcast Possible
The Bay of Plenty broadcasting station IYZ authorities are interested in the possibility of broadcasting the 600th ’ anniversary celebrations of the ’landing of the Matatua, which are to be held at the Wairaka Pa, Whakatane, on September 23. Tn the preliminary plans so far it is thought that the actual ceremony will be broadcast and some haka and poi dances selections.
Car Recovered
A motor car belonging to Magnus Lennie Motors, which disappeared from outside the garage at Whakatane early yesterday afternoon was recovered in an undamaged condition in the town at about 9.30 last night. The disappearance was reported to the police and a search of the district was be&ig made when the vehicle was recovered.
Cards With A Vengence Those who play bridge are often said to be inflicted with a disease which demands that they must keep on playing. Four Whakatane bridge players during the week-end showed that there is some truth in the saying. This quartet commenced playing at about 8.30 on Saturday night and continued right through the 10.30 power cut. They had decided one rubber by 9.30 but it took until 12.30 Sunday morning to decide the second. Surely a record. But it did not end here. By that time each had won a rubber so it was decided to continue. This they did and at 3.30 Sunday morning the final rubber was decided and the game ended. A total playing time of eight hours.
