Believe It Or Not: No Strike For 54 Years In Industry
No other British industry has a higher standing than the boot and shoe industry. Both the employers and the wage-workers in it have been ruled by reason for more than half a eentury.
As Sir George Chester said, in his lecture at Sheffield: “We have had no major dispute in our industry since 1895.”
The National Union of Boot and Shoe Operatives, of which Sir George is the General Secretary, has set an example to other Trade Unions; and the boot and shoe manufacturers have set an example to other manufacturers.
They have proved that there is no need for all the childish squabbling that goes on in so many of our industries.
