Picked The Wrong Back

Reporters and detectives usually get along together on pretty amiable terms. That is why there was nothing extraordinary when a wellknown Wellington detective slapped heartily on the back a coated and hatted figure looking through the charge sheet in an office of the Magistrate’s Court recently. In passing to the other side of the counter the detective made a mental note that the reporter seemed singularly unresponsive. On turning, perhaps to comment on this he beheld, not a reporter, but a somewhat puzzled Stipendiary Magistrate.
